Call of Duty Unveils Major New Update

Players of Call of Duty can now download a substantial new update that preloads Black Ops 6 and enhances the often criticized UI of Call of Duty HQ. Black Ops 6 marks the next installment in Activision’s renowned FPS series, featuring the return of round-based Zombies, a single-player campaign set in the early 1990s, and 16 original multiplayer maps. As one of the most anticipated releases of the Fall season, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has fans excited about its innovative omnimovement system, allowing players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction.

In August, Activision outlined a plan to tackle the game’s excessive file sizes and improve the criticized UI of Call of Duty HQ. This initiative began with the Season 5 Reloaded update, which set the stage for reorganizing the game’s files. The open beta for Black Ops 6 launched on August 30, with a UI update scheduled for mid-October. The roadmap indicates that Black Ops 6 will be released on the 25th, followed by Season 1, expected to kick off in early December.

Now, Call of Duty has delivered the anticipated UI update. While it does not introduce any gameplay changes to Modern Warfare 3 or Warzone, the update is significant as it prepares Call of Duty HQ for the upcoming launch of Black Ops 6 and features a new user interface. On PlayStation 5, the update requires 52 GB of storage, while it surprisingly takes up 112 GB on Xbox Series X and S. Reports suggest this discrepancy is due to a bug on Xbox, indicating the actual update size is smaller.

Although 52 GB is still viewed by many as excessively large for an update, players can expect file sizes to decrease over time. When Activision first shared its roadmap in August, it noted that some of these preparatory updates would be larger, but they would ultimately lead to smaller update sizes in the future. Consequently, this pre-Black Ops 6 update is likely one of the last significant ones.
